          Summary   
 

The III National and II International Symposium of Celtic and Germanic Studies will have as theme  “Knowledge and Power among Celts and Germanics: Gathering, Representation and Transformation”. The fascination for mythical kings such as Arthur, for the leadership and chieftains of Celtic and Germanic tribes as well as the relationship between sacred and commonplace in the figures of kings and chiefs has raised the interest of a great number of laymen for Celtic and Germanic History and Literature.  Such themes were the source of many appropriations and reinterpretations of this past all over Europe, and has been subject of multiple researches around the globe. Today one cannot talk about Celts, Germanics and Vikings without mentioning the sacred role oftheir chieftains and kings. One cannot forget the numerous narratives of powerful mythical leaders and their victorious queens, which have enchanted many over the centuries.

This symposium came to bring to the Brazilian public the most recent discussions about Knowledge, Power and their relationship with Holiness in Celtic  and Germanic societies, meditating on the relevance of these questions in ancient times and their transformations during the medieval period.
We are therefore inviting contributors who will discuss:

  • Power, the construction of leadership and/or nobility values in Celtic and Germanic societies;
  • The sacred quality of chiefs ans kings;
  • Mythical kings;
  • Reinterpretations and political usage of these kings in Europe since the Middle Ages until modern times;
  • The role of the Church in Germanic kingdoms;
  • Disputes between the Holy RomanEmpire and the Popes;
  • Reinterpretations of these themes by modern societies in literature, cinema and cartoons
