Since 2001, I have been a doctoral student in Medieval and Modern Languages at the UNESP/ São José do Rio Preto – SP, where I undertake a research on the representation of the Celtic woman in the French version of Tristan and Isolde by Béroul (12th century). My interest in Celtic society, in particular in gender issues, started during my experience as a junior researcher of Portuguese Medieval Literature (undergraduate course in March 1991). During this period I studied the symbolism in the Portuguese version of ‘A Demanda do Santo Graal’.
The study of female representations of Celtic society in 12th century the literature provides a new perspective for the analysis of gender issues and the female conditions during the Middle Ages.
Current Research: The representation of the Celtic woman/queen in the Early Middle Ages - VIII to X centuries
My current research concentrates on the study of the representation of the Celtic woman/queen in the Early Middle Ages contained in the romance Tristan and Isolde. For this research I am using the French version of the XII century that was organized by Joseph Bédier in the beginning of the XX century. I study the role of queen Isolde in the context of the romance Tristan and Isolde and the reason why – regardless of the Christianizing that the myth suffered in its literary form of the XII century – so many elements of Celtic culture remained unaltered and accepted by the clerical society of the time.
